The Sandman is an American fantasy drama television series inspired by the 1989–1996 comic book series written by Neil Gaiman and published by DC Comics. Developed for Netflix by Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and Allan Heinberg, the series is produced by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television. It follows the story of Dream, also known as Morpheus, portrayed by Tom Sturridge, with Boyd Holbrook, Vivienne Acheampong, and Patton Oswalt in supporting roles.

Efforts to adapt The Sandman into a film began in 1991 but faced many hurdles in development. In 2013, Goyer pitched a film adaptation to Warner Bros., intending to produce it alongside Gaiman and star Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who was also slated to direct. However, Gordon-Levitt departed the project in 2016 due to creative differences. As a result of the film’s prolonged development, Warner Bros. shifted its focus to a television adaptation. In June 2019, Netflix signed a deal to produce the series, with filming taking place from October 2020 to August 2021. The Sandman premiered on August 5, 2022, with all 10 episodes released simultaneously, followed by an additional episode on August 19. In November 2022, it was renewed for a second season, expected to debut in 2025. The series has received generally favorable reviews from critics, who have praised its casting, production design, costumes, fidelity to the source material, visual effects, and performances.

While trying to capture a nightmare known as the Corinthian, Morpheus, or Dream, is ensnared in an occult ritual by British aristocrat Roderick Burgess. Roderick seeks to capture Death in hopes of gaining supernatural powers to enhance his own wealth and influence, along with a misguided attempt to resurrect his eldest son, Randall. During this ritual, Roderick steals Morpheus’s powerful totems: his helm, a pouch of sand, and a ruby, which are eventually taken by Roderick’s bitter lover, Ethel Cripps, who is pregnant with his child.
Morpheus’s imprisonment leads to an epidemic of “sleepy sickness” that endures for 106 years. In 2021, Roderick’s younger son, Alex, now an elderly man, continues to keep Morpheus confined, relying on his partner, Paul, for care. When Paul inadvertently erases part of the runes binding Morpheus, he seizes the opportunity to reach into the dream of one of his guards, shattering his cage and allowing his escape, which results in Alex being condemned to an eternal sleep.
