In April 2020, it was announced that Ron Howard would direct Thirteen Lives, with William Nicholson writing the screenplay. The following month, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer acquired the film’s rights. By March 2021, Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, and Joel Edgerton were confirmed as part of the cast. Filming commenced on March 29, 2021, primarily in Queensland, Australia, with support from the Queensland and Gold Coast governments.
Scenes representing Chiang Rai Province were filmed at picturesque locations, including lush tropical roads, hotels, and golf courses in Mudgeeraba, Yatala, Numinbah Valley, and Carrara. Two warehouses in Yatala were utilized for production offices, and a custom-built water tank and cave interiors were constructed for the shoot. The hospital scene was filmed at Griffith University Logan Campus. The film’s original score was composed by Benjamin Wallfisch. When Howard approached his regular collaborator Hans Zimmer for the score, Zimmer highly recommended Wallfisch for the job. Impressively, Wallfisch had a 20-minute suite prepared even before filming began in Thailand.

Thirteen Lives is one of the best drama and thriller films I’ve seen. The film effectively captures the audience’s attention from beginning to end. I really appreciated the references to the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which coincided with the events in the movie. The characters are terrific, and all the actors immerse themselves in their roles exceptionally well. Although the movie is rated 16+, I believe it’s suitable for children as it contrasts reality with fiction in an engaging way. Amazon Prime has produced a remarkable film, and I loved how the cinematographer captured various shots, especially the stunning underwater scenes. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys a good, fast-paced thriller!
