Ayyappanum Koshiyum (transl. Ayyappan and Koshy) is a 2020 Indian Malayalam-language action thriller directed by Sachy, which was his last directorial project. Produced by Ranjith and P. M. Sasidharan, the film stars Biju Menon and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Released on 7 February 2020, it became one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of the year, earning ₹43 crore worldwide.

The film garnered critical acclaim, winning 4 National Film Awards at the 68th National Film Awards, including Best Director for Sachy, Best Supporting Actor for Biju Menon, Best Female Playback Singer for Nanjiyamma, and Best Stunt Choreography for Mafia Sasi, Supreme Sundar, and Rajasekhar. A Telugu remake titled Bheemla Nayak, starring Pawan Kalyan and Rana Daggubati, was released on 25 February 2022. A Hindi remake is also planned, with John Abraham reportedly in the lead role.

Koshy Kurien, a former Havildar in the Indian Army, is traveling to Ooty from Kattappana with his driver, Kumaran. Drunk and nearly passed out in the backseat, Koshy has a case of alcohol purchased from the military canteen. Instead of taking the common Coimbatore route, they opt for the Attappadi hill route, unaware that it is an alcohol-prohibited zone. They are stopped at a routine traffic check conducted by a team from the police, forest, and excise departments. When the excise officers discover the alcohol, they rough up Koshy, who, in a fit of anger, assaults one of the officers, Faizal. Sub-inspector Ayyappan Nair intervenes and restrains Koshy, who is then taken to the local police station, where an FIR is filed against him in the online system.
The officers are soon shocked to find that Koshy’s phone contains the contact numbers of several influential political and media figures. Koshy reveals that he is an ex-army officer residing in Kattappana and the son of Kurain John, a powerful and notorious political leader with a reputation for being combative. After conferring with his superior, CI Satheesh Kumar, Ayyappan decides to go easy on Koshy. He tells Koshy that he is a local and has only three years left until retirement. Koshy pleads with Ayyappan to let him go home for five days to celebrate Christmas, promising to return to face any legal consequences, but Ayyappan refuses, citing the non-bailable charges against him.
Ayyappanum Koshiyum Movie Review
I rewatched Ayyappanum Koshiyum on Amazon Prime after two years, focusing more on the music following its win of four National Awards. Nanjiyamma’s song, which plays at the beginning and end of the film, was soothing and memorable, while the background score effectively enhanced the scenes. The stunt sequences, especially the ones involving Biju Menon and Prithviraj operating JCBs to demolish structures, were well-executed, justifying the award for Best Stunt Choreography.
Biju Menon was outstanding in his portrayal of Ayyappan Nair, delivering a quiet, natural performance. The movie remained engaging throughout, though the second half felt a bit repetitive at times. I also felt the film deserved an award for cinematography, as it beautifully captured the natural landscapes of the Attappady ranges in Kerala. Overall, a good movie with impressive music, acting, and direction.
