Andy Jones is the Head Chef at Jones & Sons, an upscale restaurant in London. He’s embarrassed to find out that the restaurant’s Food Hygiene Rating has been downgraded from a 5 to a 3 after an audit, mainly due to poor administration and inadequate cleanliness at various workstations. After the inspector leaves, Andy chastises the kitchen staff for their lack of attention to detail but softens when he discovers that the turbot he had prepared earlier was discarded by the inspector for not being properly labeled. Front of house manager Beth holds a brief meeting to discuss the evening’s overbooked service, mentioning key events like a marriage proposal at one table and the arrival of celebrity chef Alastair Skye—Andy’s former boss—who will be dining with a well-known food critic.
As dinner service begins, tensions rise both in the kitchen and the dining area. Beth’s constant micro-management irritates the kitchen staff; a black waitress faces hostility from an aggressive guest, unlike her white colleague who is treated better; young pastry chef Jamie is revealed to be self-harming; a pregnant kitchen porter clashes with a lazy and disrespectful co-worker; and Camille, the new cold chef from France, struggles with the language barrier and the various British regional accents
