Swamp Thing is an American SUPERHERO television series created by Gary Dauberman and Mark Verheiden for DC Universe, inspired by the DC Comics character of the same name. The show follows medical doctor Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed) as she returns to her hometown of Marais, Louisiana, to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus. During her investigation, she forms a connection with disgraced scientist Alec Holland.

Tragically, after Holland’s death, Abby uncovers the mysteries of the swamp and begins to suspect that Holland may not be gone for good, as the eponymous Swamp Thing (Derek Mears) emerges—a plant-elemental creature fighting against malevolent forces in the area. The series premiered on May 31, 2019, comprising 10 episodes. However, shortly after its debut, DC Universe announced the show’s cancellation. The remaining episodes were released until the series concluded on August 2, 2019. Critics praised the series for its Horror elements and impressive practical monster effects.

Swamp Thing Story
In a swamp outside Marais, Louisiana, three men tasked with disposing of mutagen accelerator into the Bayou Swamp are attacked by aggressive plants, leaving only one survivor. Days later, the survivor’s daughter, Susie, falls ill with a mysterious disease spreading through the town. In response, CDC doctor and former resident Abby Arcane is dispatched to help. She reconnects with her childhood friend, policeman Matthew Cable, before meeting Alec Holland, a disgraced scientist employed by businessman Avery Sunderland to investigate the situation further.
Alec and Abby discover the survivor’s body, now overrun by a plant creature, which Alec manages to kill. After meeting Abby’s reporter friend, Liz Tremayne, they encounter Maria Sunderland, Avery’s wife. The pair eventually locate the cases of mutagen. While awaiting the test results, Abby and Alec bond, revealing that Alec had manipulated test results to validate his theories, while Abby struggles with guilt over the death of Sunderland’s daughter, Shawna.Once the results come in, Alec decides to venture out alone to find more mutagen cases. Tragically, he is violently killed and taken by the swamp. Abby rushes to find him but is startled by a mysterious moss-covered creature, forcing her to retreat in fear.
Swamp Thing Review
I wouldn’t call myself a DC fan, but this show completely won me over. I love the Beauty and the Beast narrative, and the action kept me on the edge of my seat. The casting is spot-on, especially Ian Ziering from Sharknado playing a low-budget sci-fi actor—it’s just perfect! I’m really hoping and praying that it gets miraculously revived or picked up by another streaming service.
