The project was officially launched on June 10, 2013, and principal photography took place between July 5, 2013, and February 21, 2014, with filming locations including Visakhapatnam, Araku, and the Kumararama temple in Samarlakota, Andhra Pradesh, as well as Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. After several delays, the film was released on October 24, 2014, coinciding with Diwali, and received positive reviews, grossing over ₹20 crore against a budget of ₹4–6 crore. At the 62nd Filmfare Awards South, Karthikeya was nominated in four categories, while it secured one win out of four nominations at the 4th South Indian International Movie Awards. Following its success, a sequel titled Karthikeya 2 was announced by Mondeti in late 2019 and released on August 13, 2022.

In the village of Subrahmanyapuram, an ancient temple dedicated to Subrahmanya Swami has been closed due to a series of mysterious deaths, allegedly from snake bites. Investigators who attempt to uncover the truth also fall victim to the same fate. Karthikeya, a medical student who relies on science and logic rather than superstition, arrives in Subrahmanyapuram for a medical camp, accompanied by his love interest, Valli.
Intrigued by the temple’s closure, Karthikeya begins to investigate its secrets. He discovers a diary belonging to Shankar, an official from the Endowments Department, who previously studied the temple’s mysteries before being killed by a snake bite in the very building where Karthikeya and his friends are staying.As the story unfolds, Karthikeya finds himself targeted by a snake, but he manages to escape each time. He takes the snake to a herpetologist, who reveals that it has been hypnotized by someone to attack Karthikeya. Seeking further insight, Karthikeya meets Valli’s father, a priest at the temple, to learn about its history. Their investigation leads them to Tanjavur, where they discover that the temple was uniquely designed by the legendary architect Viswakarma. A family heirloom—a diamond—was placed at the feet of the deity, allowing the moon’s rays to illuminate it on Karthika Pournami, reflecting its light back with a thousandfold intensity.

I love the concept of this story! I’m always drawn to movies and narratives like this, and Karthikeya was a perfect fit. The fact that it’s inspired by a real incident in South India makes it even more captivating. The actor did a fantastic job, and overall, the movie was awesome.
