Lightyear is a 2022 American animated science fiction action-adventure film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The film is a spin-off of the Toy Story film series, but is not set in the same fictional universe as this one. Rather, the film is presented as a film seen by the characters of the main Toy Story films. Lightyear revolves around the character Buzz Lightyear, who in this film is a human being rather than a toy. The film is directed by Angus MacLane and produced by Gaylynn Sussman, with a screenplay and story written by MacLane and Jason Headley, who co-wrote it with Matthew Aldrich. Chris Evans voices the title character, with Keke Palmer, Peter Thorne, Taika Waititi, Dale Soules, James Brolin, and Uzo Aduba in supporting roles. The film follows Buzz Lightyear (Evans), a space ranger, as he tries to find a way back home during a mission that threatens his safety after he is stranded on the hostile planet Tikani Prime with his commander and crew.

The concept of a human Buzz Lightyear existing in a fictional universe within a fictional universe was first introduced in the 2000 direct-to-video film Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins, which served as the pilot for the television series Buzz Lightyear of Star Command (2000-2001). McClain, an avid science fiction fan, pitched the idea of a Buzz Lightyear movie to Pixar after finishing work on Finding Dory (2016). The project was officially announced at an investor conference held by Disney in December 2020.

A year later, the crew set up a new colony for repairs. However, after a four-minute test flight, Buzz realizes that four years have passed on T’Kani Prime due to time dilation caused by travel at relativistic speeds. Buzz meets Socks, an orange robot cat, and continues to test the hyperspace fuel. With each test, another four years pass on T’Kani Prime, until finally, more than 66 years have passed. During this time, the colony has developed, Alesha has raised a son with his wife Kiko, who later dies of old age, while Socks has improved the composition of the fuel, allowing it to travel faster than the speed of light. Buzz uses a new fuel composition to successfully complete a hyperspace test. However, he flies another 22 years into the future, where Tukani Prime is attacked by Cyclops robots led by the robot Commander Zurg. Buzz meets members of the Colony Defense Force, including Alesha’s grown granddaughter Izzy Hawthorne, the new and naive recruit Mo Morrison, the older parolee Darby Steele, and the robot Derrick. Though initially hesitant to work with them, Buzz eventually grows fond of them after they escape the insect nest and investigate a mining facility to repair their ship. Together, they plan to destroy the invasion force on Zurg’s mothership.
Lightyear Movie Review
A lot of movies these days are too long, bloated, self-referential, and full of cheesy pop culture gags, but not Lightyear. I loved that this Pixar movie was unique outside of Toy Story. Honestly, this is a must-see for all lovers of the sci-fi genre, and it has some of the best spaceflight I’ve ever seen in a sci-fi movie. This movie had me on the edge of my seat many times, brought tears to my eyes many times, and laughed a lot.
The pacing is great, the humor is appropriate for kids and adults alike, the science fiction is very good, it’s well-inspired by current real and theoretical spaceflight, and it’s mixed with a lot of fun design and beautiful imagery. On top of that, it has a great cast, and the subject matter is very meaningful to me and I think it will resonate with a lot of people.Watch this movie and put together the best team! I really loved it, and I think you will too!
