Munjya is a 2024 Indian Hindi-language Horror film directed by Aditya Sarpodar and starring Sharvari, Abhay Verma, Sathyaraj and Mona Singh. The titular characters were created entirely in CGI. Produced by Amar Kaushik and Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, the film is the fourth installment in the Maddock Supernatural Universe and focuses on the legend of Munjya, inspired by Indian folklore and mythology.

Munjya was released in theatres worldwide on June 7, 2024, to positive reviews. The film was an unexpected success, grossing Rs 132 crore worldwide against a production budget of Rs 300 crore. This made it the sixth highest-grossing Hindi film of 2024.
In conversation with Mid-Day, Bhatt spoke about the four traditional stages of life in Hinduism — brahmacharya (student life), garhastha (family life), vanaprastha (retirement) and sannyasa (renunciation). He mentioned the Upanayan ritual, known as munja in Marathi, which marks the beginning of the student stage, and the Sodh-munja ritual, which marks the transition from student life to family life. Essentially, he explains the meaning of these rituals in light of the stages of life, as per Hindu tradition. If a man dies after the Munja ritual, but before Sodh Munja, without marrying, he turns into a Munja (a spirit that lives near poplar trees or wells). Poplar trees give off a lot of carbon dioxide after dark, so people are discouraged from sitting among the trees after sunset for fear of encountering a Munja.

In 1952, a boy named Gothia falls in love with Munni, a girl seven years older than him, in a Konkan village. When Munni is set to marry another man, Gothia tries to poison Munni but fails. Scolded by his mother, Gothia becomes a priest and decides to marry Munni. He takes his sister Geeta to a jungle called Chetukwadi to practice black magic under a poplar fig tree. In the process, he accidentally commits suicide while trying to sacrifice his sister, and becomes a malevolent spirit named Munja who possesses the tree.
Decades later, Bittu is a shy young man living in Pune who wants to study cosmetology while working as a hairdresser in his mother Pammi’s salon. He loves his grandmother dearly and is very attached to her. He is in love with his childhood friend Bella but does not confess his feelings to her. Bella returns from America after completing her studies and is proposed to by her boyfriend Kuba, leaving Bittu heartbroken.
