Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a 2022 American animated fantasy adventure comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. It is a sequel to the spin-off film Puss in Boots (2011) and the sixth film in the Shrek film series. It is directed by Joel Crawford, co-directed by Januel Mercado (in his feature film debut), and written by Paul Fisher, Tommy Swerdlow, and Tom Wheeler. The voice cast is based on characters from Shrek the Second (2004), which is inspired by the fairy tale of the same name. The voice cast includes Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek reprising their roles as the title character and Kitty Softpaws, respectively. New cast members include Harvey Guillen, Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone, Samson Kayo, John Mulaney, and Wagner Moura.

Planning for a Puss in Boots sequel began in November 2012, but was stuck in development hell until it was revived in November 2018. Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri was confirmed as executive producer. In February 2019, it was announced that the film would be directed by Bob Persichetti, story helmer for the first film and co-director of Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: The New Universe (2018). However, Crawford signed with Mercado and replaced Persichetti as director in March 2021. The story is inspired by spaghetti westerns, with The Rogues (1966) cited as a particular influence.

Hosting a party in the town of Delmar, Puss in Boots defeats a giant, but is then crushed by a church bell. After he recovers, the town doctor advises him to retire, as he has already lost eight of his nine lives.
Puss in Boots initially refuses, but buckles when he is wounded and disarmed in a duel with a wolf that he mistakes for a bounty hunter in a local pub. Traumatized by the event, Puss in Boots follows the doctor’s orders and goes to the home of Mama Luna, an elderly cat lady, to bury his clothes.
A few months later, Puss in Boots meets an optimistic Chihuahua dressed as a cat, whom he names Perito. Perito expresses a desire to be a therapy dog and decides to befriend Puss.
Goldilocks and the Three Bears crime family soon arrive at Luna’s house, hoping to hire Puss to help them steal a map showing the location of the Wishing Star. They leave after finding what is believed to be his grave, and Puss decides to find the star to wish for nine more lives.
