Alice in Borderland is a Japanese science fiction thriller drama series based on the manga by Haro Aso. The series was directed by Shinsuke Sato. Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya play friends who are trapped in an abandoned Tokyo and forced to participate in a dangerous game. The nature and difficulty of the game are expressed in playing cards. The idea is to extend a “visa”, and if the visa expires, the player will be executed by a laser fired from the sky.

The first season of the series was announced in July 2019 and was filmed from August to December 2019. Filming locations include a green screen studio that recreated the Shibuya district and Shibuya Crossing. The show’s visual effects were produced by Japan’s Digital Frontier in international collaboration with teams in Singapore, the United States, and India. The film’s music was composed by Yamada Yutaka, who has worked with Sato.

In Tokyo, video game-obsessed Alice spends her time with her friends Chata and Karube. After an argument at Shibuya Crossing, the three escape the police and hide in a train station toilet, but when they come out, the city is deserted. At night, they follow the directions of a sign to a “stadium”. They find a pile of phones showing the difficulty of the game represented by playing cards. The group is joined by a high school student and another woman named Shibuki, who tells them that once they enter the arena, they cannot leave, because if players try to enter it, they will be shot with lasers. The game features a Three of Clubs difficulty level titled Dead or Alive, where the party must choose between two doors within a time limit; one leads to another room with the same choice, the other leads to certain death.

What sets Alice in Borderland Season 2 apart from the rest is the design of each game and the appeal of the characters it plays. This is especially true of Chisiya’s midseason arc. Ultimately, Season 2 is bloodier, more dramatic, and more action-packed than the first season. However, compared to the first, it also seems to be a series that focuses more on action than characters, and this difference makes us expect a bit more from this series when the credits roll for Episode 8. While the final episode may be hard to wrap up, how each character is concluded and played out helps make the final episode impactful.
