The series is produced by Anushka Sharma under the name Clean Slate Films and stars Jaideep Ahlawat, Gul Panag, Neeraj Kabi, Swastika Mukherjee, Ishwak Singh, Abhishek Banerjee, Niharika Laila Dutt and Richa Chaturvedi. The series is loosely based on Tarun Tejpal’s 2010 novel My Story of an Assassin and tells the story of a disillusioned police officer who solves a case of assassination.

The series revolves around Hathiram Choudhary a cynical police officer tasked with investigating a major case. He is caught during the investigation and drawn into the dark realm of the underworld. Paatal Lok is inspired by the traditional concepts of Svarga, Dharti and Paatal (heaven, earth and hell) as a metaphor for India’s different classes and four estates, with Paatal (hell) serving as the main stage of the plot. After the initial exciting episode, the case revolves around social criticism on fake news, power, politics, caste and religion based discrimination, love for dogs, anxiety disorders etc. Here the makers have crossed the line a bit. Too many subplots and backstories make the pace a bit slow. Graphic depictions of violence and sexual abuse are not for the faint of heart.Despite
a fascinating idea, the story feels boring, overstuffed and long towards the end. There’s so much going on that it all gets a bit confusing.To sum up, Paatal Lok has a gripping and suspenseful structure that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
