The Meg 2: The Trench is a 2023 science fiction action film directed by Ben Wheatley and a sequel to The Meg (2018), based on the 1999 novel The Trench by Steve Alten. Hoeber, Erich Hoeber and Dean Georgalis all return as screenwriters from the previous film, with Jason Statham, Sophia Kai, Paige Kennedy and Cliff Curtis reprising their roles, along with Wu Jing, Sergio Peris-Mencheta and Skyler Samuels.

As with the first film, the story follows a group of scientists who must outsmart and swim past a megalodon when an evil mining operation threatens their mission, forcing them into a high-stakes fight for survival. Plans for the sequel were announced in October 2018 following the box office success of the first film and are in early stages of development. Principal photography is scheduled to begin in February 2022 and run through May, taking place in various locations in Asia and at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, Watford, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom.
The Meg 2: The Trench premiered at the Shanghai International Film Festival on June 9, 2023, and was released in the United States on August 4 by Warner Bros. Pictures. Although the film received negative reviews, it was a huge box office success, grossing $397.7 million worldwide.

The Meg 2: The Trench is right up my cinematic junk food alley. The movie feels like a throwback to 90s blockbusters, has a rap song called “Chomp” and the end credits almost make you think it might be “Voice of Magic Taco…James Earl Jones”. As you can see, I enjoyed this movie so much that I hope they take advantage of every last drop of it for the rest of the series.
